May, 2008

This is National Teaching Month!  This is the month we take time to recognize the dedication and hard work of all of our staff members.

I’ll bet you remember a teacher or staff member that made a difference to you.  Teachers and staff enjoy hearing from their students and former students.  It’s always a pleasure to hear about their endeavors and accomplishments.

Please ask your child what made this school year special for him/her, and then help your child make a card or write a letter for that special staff member at Pine Hill.  I know it will be appreciated, and it will give your child a real life opportunity to use many of the skills they have learned in school.

May is also a time to remember our mothers.  All of the Pine Hill staff join me in wishing all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day.  We look forward to seeing all of our students’ mothers at our Mother’s Day Teas this month.

Yours in Education

Alison J. Caputy

INTERNATIONAL READING ASSOCIATION

EXEMPLARY READING PROGRAM AWARD

Pine Hill Primary Center has won the International Reading Association's Exemplary Reading Program Award for New York State.  The award will be presented to Mrs. Caputy and Mrs. Lattanzio in Atlanta, Georgia on May 4, 2008.

Kudos to every Pine Hill staff member.

HOW CAN PARENTS BEST PROVIDE A HOME  ENVIRONMENT FAVORABLE TO LEARNING?

Parents are their children’s first and most influential teachers.  What parents do to help their children learn is extremely important to their academic success.  Teaching the value of education, hard work and responsibility is some of the greatest gifts you can give.

Effective parents teach their children largely by example through household routines, daily conversation, attention to school matters and a genuine concern for their progress.  As the school year begins, consider the following:

Þ Read, talk and listen to your children

Þ Tell them stories, play games with them, share hobbies, etc.

Þ Make books, magazines and newspapers available to them

Þ Monitor the amount of time spent watching TV and playing video games

Þ Regularly talk with your children about school problems and successes, providing praise, guidance and encouragement
